Pocket Radar Ball Coach User Reviews:

  • “We used the ball coach on 5 kids with known velocities, and they all were within 1 mph on all the kids. Very impressed so far. The only complaint/ comment is the battery will run down quick if you are using it every inning to see when a kids arm is getting tired. I guess that would be just some info for people wanting to use it as much as we do. It really became a good tool to get pitcher to use their lower half more to try to throw the ball harder. It has become a fun game once a week for the kids at practice to see who throws the hardest.”
  • “Using it to measure my 10U player’s pitch speed, pitching and exit velocity. Simple to use. Great training tool!”
  • “I love pitching and enjoy utilizing this device every once in a while to see how my team is pitching. We use it for hitting and pitching velocities. It’s about as accurate as my stalker 2, but much easier to use as it’s small and can be placed in a pocket. I love both my devices for different reasons. This is a must have if you don’t feel like lugging around a radar gun as it’s very accurate. My experience is pocket radar reads around 1 mph higher than stalker.”

The Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun

The Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun is a top choice for serious baseball players and coaches. This baseball radar gun has a range of up to 500 feet and can measures pitch speeds up to 150 mph. Bushnell are known for their quality of baseball radar guns.

Bushnell Speed Radar Gun

4.3 Stars

Knowing how fast a player pitches or runs can instantly influence a coaching decision. Enter the Bushnell Velocity speed gun, which tells you the speed of an object within plus-or-minus 1 mile per hour. It is outfitted with digital signal processing technology, which can measures the speed of a baseball from up to 90 feet, or a moving vehicle from as far as 1,500 feet.

As a result, it’s a breeze to take a player’s 40 time or measures the speed of a tennis serve. The Velocity is also a breeze to use, with a point-and-shoot pistol grip that displays the fastest speed timed once the trigger is released.

The Bushnell radar gun offers easy point-and-shoot operation that can be used for tracking everything from race cars to pitching speeds. A large LCD display makes it easy to read the speed. Aim the Velocity at the target and depress the trigger.

As a quick reference to accuracy, remember to keep your target’s direction of travel in a direct line with you and not perpendicular to you.

Bushnell Velocity Product Specifications:

  • Large, clear LCD display. Note: Batteries need to be installed appropriately for the item to turn on and function
  • Displays fastest speed once trigger is released
  • An easy point and shoot speed gun with plus/minus 1.0 MPH accuracy
  • Can track the speed of a ball from 10 feet up to 110 MPH

Bushnell Velocity User Reviews:

  • “Variability is a little bit too off in my opinion. Adding anywhere from 4-10 mph is typically what’s needed. We took it to our local D-Bat which has a radar velocity area. The Bushnell was always 4-6 mph under no matter what, but randomly would miss under by up to 10-12 mph.”
  • “I’ve owned this for 3 weeks. I am a pitcher trying to gain pitch speed mph. I know I am pitching 82 consistent based on “real” guns and 81-85 pitch speed is my range. After reading lots of sites and analysis I know that this gun is slow due to it taking the speed late in the pitch’s path. The speed that JUGS and other scout’s guns read is directly out of the pitcher’s hand (within 3 ft from release) which is what the entire baseball community uses as a standard. A pitcher loses 8-10 mph of pitch speed between release to catcher. The Bushnell reads basically midway through. To me that means the gun is 4-5 MPH slow every time. Many people claim that it is 7-10 mph slow but I think if all conditions are perfect (held at perfect parallel and close to pitcher) it will be 4-5 mph slow. I am pitching 81 max and 78 consistent without over-exertion on this gun. So buy with confidence that it is consistent. Just add 5 mph every time.”

The Stalker Sport 2 Radar Gun

The Stalker Pro II Radar Gun is a professional-grade model that is used by many MLB teams. It has a range of up to 1,500 feet and can measures pitch speed up to 600 mph.

Stalker Pro II Radar Gun

4.1 Stars

The Stalker Sport 2 is the powerful, and easy to use baseball solution. Quickly and easily measures pitch speed and running speed with (2) active speed windows.

Greater range, accuracy, and consistency put the Sport 2 in a class of their own and dramatically outperform other low-power, short-range, pocket-style radars.

The Stalker Sport 2 Radar Gun Product Specifications:

  • 300-Foot Range, farther than any competitor!
  • Measures ball speeds from 5-150 mph. Accurate to +/- 1 mph
  • Captures release speed and plate speed simultaneously
  • Built by the industry leader – Stalker Radar

The Stalker Sport 2 Radar Gun User Review:

“I came to the stalker 2 from the bushnell gun after reading numerous times that the bushnell gun runs slow. This isn’t the whole story.

I tested both guns side-by-side on balls pitched from a hack attack pitching machine, balls hit off a tee, and balls hit off of the hack attack (exit velocity).

The reality is that for pitches from 40-81 mph (highest settings on machine) the guns matched up relatively well. The Stalker 2 was as much as 3 mph higher than the bushnell at the lower velocities (40-50) when the guns had a close, direct line of site. However roughly 10% of the time the bushnell would completely misread a pitch by 10 mph or so, whereas the stalker 2 picked up every pitch accurately. So when both guns picked up the pitch accurately, the velocity was somewhat consistent. The stalker is simply more sensitive, and registers the pitch sooner and completely reliably from numerous positions. This is exacerbated as velocity increases, so at times I’d have roughly a 4-5 mph difference on pitches both guns picked up at top velocity.

When a close, direct line of site is unavailable, such as being 10-15 feet behind the catcher, or slightly off to the side, again the stalker was substantially more accurate, and the bushnell missed even more frequently.

Now exit velocity is where the stalker really sets itself apart. Off the tee, from behind a net, this gun picks up a much wider area, and increases as you back away from the batter. From 15 feet away, I found that at least half the time the bushnell was picking up the bat, whereas the stalker always picked up the ball, so many of the balls that seemed mis-hit with the bushnell were simply not registered, and we would see a =/- 50% difference in readings between guns, especially on fly balls. The bushnell really only picks up a line drive right back at the gun.

The same holds true for pitches hit off the machine, where the bushnell is basically useless, but the stalker picks up all the exit velocities, especially from 10 feet or so behind the machine. After a handful of pitches I just put the bushnell down and continued with the stalker, as the bushnell failed to read anything but the pitch.

Also of note: the stalker 2 screws onto a standard camera tripod with no mounting bracket required, so it’s now mounted to an Amazon basics tripod, set behind a small screen. The trigger is not required to capture a reading, so I can catch bullpen and read the gun simultaneously.

So my verdict is if you are looking for a fun toy to monitor a young athlete’s pitching from close proximity to the mound, the bushnell is a decent value. If you want something accurate and consistent that can pick up exit velocity, this is the radar gun. We learned a lot about my son’s swing today from the stalker that we can use right away.”
